World Environment Day at Infosys Pune

The purpose of World Environment Day is to focus worldwide attention on the importance of our Environment....and we did just that with Infoscions at Pune !

This event was a result of an ongoing effort by the company and it's Eco Club Members to encourage environment conservation consciousness and engage Infoscions to work towards achieving environmental sustainability.

The result was - lots and lots of fun ! The Infoscions were uber cool and set thier "Friday mood" just right for our stall to be a success !

They loved our Therapeutic Handmade soaps and were pleasantly amused by the soaps in shape of a cupcake ! Theyadmired our Bamboo fiber T shirts and those made by chemical free Organic Cotton. Recycled Paper products were preferred as gifts and the bags were donned by smart ladies at the campus.. Nitin's first brand new clothes !

You all are now well aware of the hand painted organic T shirts and bags we make using non-toxic paints. They are smart, sassy and cool environmentally conscious designs , playfully made by rural children with the kind consent of thier parents. Together, we make good use of their summer vacations and also add immense value to our 100% organic cotton and bamboo T shirts for all ages.

Last week itself I paid Rs.1200/- to a 16 year old boy named Nitin. That very evening he went to buy a denim jeans for himself. The next morning he came and very enthusiastically said " Didi maine do nayi jeans khareedi hai" , which means - elder sister , I purchased two new pairs of jeans. I was happy for him and I asked how much did he buy it for, and he said that he got 2 for Rs.500/- each. I thought to myself that he literally blew away all his money and has nothing left for his education.

I asked his mother, who works at our place about this big purchase and she was smiling. She said that she didn't want to dampen his spirit of making the first wardrobe buy of his life. I was shocked - he had purchased clothes for the first time in his life. All these years, he could never afford to wear new clothes - he would always wear what was given for him to his mother as alms or as compensation along with her work.

His mother is a household servant. Even we would give my brothers old clothes to her not realizing that these old clothes are his only wardrobe and he has NEVER bought anything new EVER !

I was so touched and felt good about being able to provide a better life at least to a handful to begin with.. I so strongly felt that the realization of our mission for Adya International would actually begin with small pockets and small steps taken towards a better future of all people associated with us. It has been the strongest belief of the company that only by making others happy, you realize your happiness.

Considering the water shortage that the whole world is facing today, conservation and intelligent utilisation of water resources has become extremely essential. Small measures can make a big difference. To think of it, getting an ordinary toilet leak repaired could lead to saving of nearly 200 litres of water a day while a faucet leak repair can save up to10,000 litres a year. Here are 25 ways to get you started on the 'save water' mission: Saving water indoors
1.
Think you might have a leak? Check by reading your water meter before and after a 2-hour period when water hasn't been run in your house. If the reading isn't precisely the same, you've got a leak.
2.
If you've got a well-water system and the pump comes on when no one is using water, you have a leak.
3.
Dripping faucets need to be repaired right away. Usually it's a simple matter of switching worn washers. Check all the washers in the house and replace them all at once.
4.
Install faucet aerators to slow the flow of water.
5.
Rinse vegetables over a large bowl and reuse what would have gone down the drain to water plants.
6.
Defrost foods in the microwave instead of under running water.
7.
Insulate water heater and water pipes. (65% of the water you use is hot water.)
Saving water in the bathroom
8.
Don't let the water run incessantly when you are shaving, brushing your teeth, etc.
9.
Replace two-handle systems with single-lever faucets.

You may not be very aware, but in the United States, we are using bags all of the time! There are the bags we get at the retail grocery store, the ones we pack lunches in, the ones other retail items come in and everything that is packaged by the very manufacturer. Inevitibly we could all end up, literally, buried under the pile of the bags that we collect in a life time. And what a waste that would be! The good news is that most of those bags come from recycled products and with any luck, in the recycle process, will return to the start and be recycled into the bags that we will use again and again.
But what should the average American consumer do when those bags start to pile up high? It doesn’t take very long for the pile to start to form, maybe two or three big trips to the grocery store, and you could end up with 15 or more bags per visit. What are some of the good ways we can keep the build up of plastic bags to a minimum?
If there are cats in your own house those left over bags from the grocery store come in handy when cleaning out the litter box. Just having the bags around when you have to touch something you really don’t want to. By having the bags, in hand, the actual touching of the item is no longer an issue at all and it will help with germs being passed from cat litter box to human, which can cause all kinds of illnesses.
People can reuse the bags as lunch bags, rather than the very old way of using a new “brown bag” for lunch carrying purposes. It may not seem like a very great effort but each and every effort, no matter how little, is having an impact.
Another good way to cut down on the recycling in the area of shopping is to have a designated bag that can be used over and over again for the groceries. Totally eliminating the very need for the plastic bag is a huge step toward progress when it comes to recycling. There are companies that sell bags for this very purpose and some of them are made from organic materials and even have sayings on them like, “Nothing on me is plastic,” and my personal favorite, “I’m not an old bag!” I love the good companies that make bags like these because they can do it with flair. Some of the recycled bags come in a rainbow of neon colors that are, to say the least, eye catching, as well as reusable! Canvas totes can be thrown into a washing machine and will serve for so many, many trips to pick up bread and milk.
The bottom line is becoming very aware of what we use and how such items can be reused. No matter where you shop or what purchases you make, if, at the end of the day you’re surrounded by plastic bags, there’s always a good way to get more use out of them.

Cow Power

PG&E has partnered with California dairies to make enough renewable energy over the next five years to power 150,000 homes. And since we have more cows than any other state, there's a world of good that can be done right here in Central California. Manure naturally releases methane gas into the atmosphere. When released, methane gas is over 20 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. Which means that even if we didn't turn methane into clean energy, it would still be in our best interest to keep it from being released into the atmosphere.

So how does it work? The manure is flushed into a tank or a tented lagoon, where the manure decomposes and the methane gas bubbles off, before being captured under the cover. The gas is then pumped from the digester, then purified and compressed into PG&E's gas pipelines. After purification, the methane gas is the same as traditional natural gas, except that it's renewable and cleaner. PG&E then burns the gas to create power for our customers.

We're looking for more dairy farms and spreading the word as much as possible. Because the more methane we keep out of the air, the better off we'll all be.

Khadi workers likely to get hike in wages

In order to improve the condition of the Khadi workers, Government is planning to hike their wages by 50 percent. According to Mr Elamaram Karim, Minister for Industries and Commerce, currently, a khadi worker gets Rs70 per day.Now, as soon as Khadi Commission gives approval of this proposal, it will be implemented. The State Government is also planning to provide some more incentives other than this. There is a huge demand for khadi .

Think about the average, toxic-laden day of an average Urban Human...

You wake up at 7 a.m. and brush your teeth with fluoride (toxic) toothpaste using chlorinated (toxic) water.
Then you step into the shower and breathe in chlorine vapors (toxic).
You come out of the shower and put on underarm deodorant with aluminum (toxic) and a host of other poisonous, cancer-causing chemicals.
If you’re female you apply your makeup, which is full of cancerous chemicals.
If you’re wearing a brand new shirt, you’re exposing yourself to formaldehyde.
Next you go down to breakfast and have coffee with DDT (toxin) and many other pesticide and synthetic (toxic) residues. If it’s decaf, it’s made with hexane (toxic) to separate the caf from the coff.
Later that day you head out for lunch and have a diet coke full of toxic artificial sweeteners and a turkey sandwich with antibiotics and steroids that had been injected into the animal.
When you drive home in your car, you breathe in traffic fumes and dioxin and mercury from a nearby incinerator.
If you happen to get a cavity from the toxic sugar in your diet and have to see the dentist, the toxic load continues to pile up. “Dental amalgams, known as silver fillings, are composed of roughly 50 percent mercury. Studies of people with mercury-containing dental fillings show a correlation between the number and size of the fillings and the amount of mercury excreted in their urine. The relationship suggests that the mercury is derived from mercury vapor released from the fillings.
